What's going on with your 200HP??

Wow Im on a roll, 2 days and 2 new posts, I must be feeling flash today.

Alot of people have been e-mailing and asking what's going on with my aim to get my car up to at least 200bhp. Im nearly there, hopefully everything should be going in around March time. Whether it will hit 200bhp with my current setup, I'm not too sure. I saw a MK1 owner battle to get to 200bhp to find that he would not have an engine left within 10 miles as running that hard would kill it.

So he was advised by a tuner to aim for 185bhp which is nice and safe, so we'll have to see what happens.

Winter slippy and slide

Hello....

Yep it's me and I've been lazy again, no updates since January, I hope you're not dispappointed. It's the middle of winter here in England and it's cold, very cold which means icy and greasy road conditions and they lay down salt and other rubbish to stop the road from icing up.

Anybody in a normal mundane box car might aswell stop reading now, you're OK, but for us Rear Wheel Drive owners, going up hills and pulling out of junctions can be fun and scary at the same time.Plant your foot (legally and safely) on the accelerator/gas/loyd pedal and all your wheels will tend to do is spin and spin and spin!!!

Eventually you're start moving, or your car will go into kill "the driver mode" that's where the backend wants to start wagging, and send you into a field/hedge/ditch.

This is what can happen.

This is not my car (thankfully) but a guy Simon B who escaped unharmed but it's stark reminder of what can happen. He was running alot of power and this was not his fault. The dangers of winters were also demonstrated to me in a Nissan 200SX S12 which is very tail happy, so in times on cold, take it easy, if you're still cynical, look at those pictures above.

Has it been this long??

I have been slack haven't I??!! I haven't been near this blog since November 20th, have I been busy or too lazy.......too lazy.....ok I admit it, at least I was honest.

The quest is nearly complete well the first stage, the turbo is booked and deposited and coming over from the states soon, the ECU plus all the other stuff it comes with is on it's way to Phils workshop and all the other bits and bobs needed are nearly ready for install, so once w'ere on our way I'll update you soon but it's time for another story....this one involves the police.

Yes I was pulled over by the police this morning, but this does not annoy me, what annoys is the damn attitude, why is their a need for it, surely they can't train our officers to be this unfriendly. Is it really hard to be polite, other forces manage to do it, why not my local force. I swear it's so they can intimidate you!!

Anyways......I'll try and get back to my twice dailu updating of car news plus other bits, so I'll be back soon.

Can anyone work harder than this man??

I think in my quest for power and fun I have to put out a big thanks to one man, his name is Phil and he works for a company called Performance 5. (http://www.performance5.com)

As I type this very blog (a Sunday morning) he is currently working on my suspension which is being modified so it makes the car handle better then it already is. It's a Sunday - the man never stops and I can't help but feel a bit guilty, well I suppose I am paying for it to be fitted.

He'll also be doing for now "top secret" hybrid turbo conversion using some interesting toys to day the least. Even though Daz and Andy keep plugging to get a supercharger (they are great just not my thing lads! - Sorry)

So hats off to Phil, you're doing a great job and his job will be much easier once he starts upgrading his garage, so if you need a top honest bloke to make your 5 go faster, ask Phil, he'll sort it out (so it don't sound like an advert) other 5 tuners are available.

....As an example on to how hard this man works, he fitted my brake pads at 3am on Saturday morning while I was tucked up in bed....is the man crazy?? Well........hmmm no, I think he loves his MX5's too much....well some of his work has been featured in EVO (top car mag in the UK) and in Japanese Performance Magazine, for that to happen he must be dedicated!!

We're only human after all...

For just today I'm going to put mad horsepower and great cars aside, I'm sure the same thoughts similar to mine have been posted across the world on other blogs and websites across the world and I feel it's now my turn.

I watched a very chlling documentary on the BBC last night titled "7/7: The Days the Bombs came to London" if you did'nt know already on the 7th July this year London suffered it's worst peacetime attrocity, 4 suicide bombers attacked the capital and bombed, 3 tubes and 1 bus.

Watching it brought back some terrible memories and images but nothing compared to what the emergency services had to endure. I was broadcasting and doing a normal shift and I still remember being told at 8.52am that a major electrical surge had knocked out Liverpool Street and then broadcasting it on BBC Essex and BBC Three Counties (I work as a travel news broadcaster from London and broadcast to various stations across the South East)

My shift was due to end in an hour, little did I know I wasn't even going to go home that day.

The situation developed very quickly and before I knew it I was broadcasting news every 15 minutes outside of rush hour to plenty of stations across the South East, that something more major had happened and that the tube network had been shut down.

It's strange, it must be instinct but I didn't get scared, I just sat down and did the job that was asked of me, I broadcasted for 18 hours that day, I usually broadcast for 4-6 hours, I also tried to reach family and friends, luckily they all tried to reach me and I received a flood of text messages asking if I was OK. I could not reply as the mobile network was jammed, probably with people doing the same thing, even the landlines were jammed. (although looking back I'd rather the emergency services used them as they really needed them that day)

We are located in Farringdon and I could not believe how near the attrocities everything was, in fact they were less than 3-5 miles from our offices near Smithfields Market.

The atmosphere was hectic but tense in the office, TV's blaring news, editors being drafted in make sure our information was getting out. I really felt for our TV travel presenter, her boyfriend was taking the tube that day, she broke down and I don't blame her, luckily we managed to reach him and he was OK, another colleagues cousin was also admitted to hospital with injuries, I know it's seems selfish but the stations needed a service and our afternoon shift staff rota had been obliterated - no one could get in and the morning shift couldn't go home (my route was a 45 minute tube journey), eventually it was decided that more experienced morning broadcasters should stay on with a break.

In a small pub in Farringdon (the Bishops Finger - great little place) I was met with the strangest sscene, hundreds of office/city/market workers and various other tourists all completely transfixed by the BBC news channel, in fact I think it was catching as myself and four of my colleagues were also caught up by what was going on, but I felt alot more confortable plus people were alot more open and welcoming.

It was also a chance to debrief with friends and colleagues, which was a welcome relief away from the office before I went back to do another gruelling 8 hours on air, I did try everything to get home and my thanks go out to Pete and Alistair who offered me every option except flight to get me back to where I live, I decided to hotel it like many others in the capital that evening, with an ex-member of staff turned cabbie driving us everywhere.

I was in the company of 3 great people that night, Max, Kelly and Steve, good friends and just the right type of people you need in times like this.

Watching that programme brought back these memories to me, it was kind of upsetting, but also a stark reminder on how vulnerable this world now is, but London did stand firm, and I got back on the tube the next day to finally get home after doing a another morning shift. Papers were filled with haunting images I'm sure none of us will forget like the people who died doing the thing they do everyday.

They tried again two weeks later and thankfully failed, it still caused disruption but nothing has as bad as the first time.

Looking back nearly 5 months on, I'm sure I would of rather been off and been away from London, and yes these were terrible attacks, but it certainly makes me appreciate friends, family and everything else I have.

Dropping my car??...NO not off a cliff.

Yes... you heard it correctly, the first phase of "Plan 200bhp" is on it's way, after much negotiation, working out and some sums, my friends at Performance 5 and Tracktec have sorted me out with new suspension and springs (BOING!) go on this weekend (Saturday 12th Nov)

For the people going (eh?? what is this idot on about - his car has suspension - why change it?) Without going into an anoraky (snore!) explanation, it'll make my car more fun round corners, a bit more bumpy but hey I like annoying cars, especially the "boredom" wheel drive, sorry Front Wheel Drive ones.

Phase 2 is being kept top secret until the very last minute, only a select few know what's going on, if I tell you I'll have to take you through the intiation ceremony.

That's it for now, nothing new in the Jap Performance World at the moment, but I will return soon.

Ugly cars and busy times for Jap HP!

Ever get one of those months, weeks, days when the day seems to go ever SO QUICKLY, well I've had one of those months.

So much to do, sort out my car, sort out my (ARGH!!! eeekkkk) tax payments. So I haven't disappeared into the sunset just yet.

So back to my twice day blogging, so we start with ugly cars, now check this thing out, it's also another reason not to buy an MPV

Now Im sure it's a great car, very reliable and economical but it's just SO ugly, a survey was carried out in the UK and this was voted the ugliest car, and I'm not surprised, look at that back end??!!

The designer must of got carried away with their ruler.

Eurobox Revenge or is it jealously?

The Mazda MX-5 is the first car I've owned, truely loved and enjoyed, I wash it, spend money on it, buy proper tyres and purhcase modifications to make it better but owning such a great car has it's side effects, it's called the invasion of the Eurobox.

Before we get confused lets define "Eurobox"

Eurobox: A boring front wheel drive functional car that's designed to look boring, get you from A to B, but for the hell of it lets stick a big meaty engine so it can go fast in a STRAIGHT LINE (remember that last bit)

Some examples of a Eurobox - VW Golf, Ford Focus, Seat Leon, Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Astra (ok Im starting to fall asleep)

OK I'm a man, I have testosterone and therefore Im competive and from time to time have decided to annoy one of these boxes but even when Im not in the mood, they cut you up, attempt to keep up with you, when will they learn!!??

My car CAN GO ROUND corners quicker than them, this is a SPORTS car. Most SPORTS cars are rear wheel drive, which means better steering into corners, where as most Eurobox's are front wheel drive which means "understeering" into corners, which usually means finding the brakes quickly.

The worst offenders are people carriers (used primarily by mums to cart kids to and from school) or Four Wheel Drives (to do the same thing - they NEVER go off the road in England) they can't keep up as they are so heavy so a LIGHTWEIGHT sportscar will outrun them - with a little effort.

I think it comes down to one thing - I had the guts to purchase one of these cars, they were sheep and had to buy what everryone else had, they when there functional little car is not as good looking or as fast they try and drive into you or try or outsmart you, so maybe it's not revenge - but more a case of jealously.

So which one would you choose??

Scare yourself Sensible....I certainly did!!

It's an experience hosted by Lotus Sport, the Lotus is name steeped in motor racing history and they continue to produce fantastic sports car like the Lotus Exige and the Lotus Elise, and they Elise is the one I had a chance to drive.

For £99 you can scream round their Norfolk Track in one of these beautiful looking cars, have a look round the factory then get taken round the track by one of the professionals who drive these, day in and day out and only one work can describe this experience....FANTASTIC!!

If you are in England for a few weeks and you're a petrol nut!! go and do it you won't regret it.

A V8 in an MX5/Miata/Eunos....surely not???

While doing some more research on how to get my car to 200bhp I came across some interesting articles that involved putting a 5 LITRE V8 ENGINE!! in an MX5, as I carried on, it appears all types of engine have been shoehorned into this sexy looking sportscar I own.

Crazy....well not really?? It appears that it's been going on for years in America and the scene is growing quickly in the UK and Australia and the Japs are just mad and drop incredibly powerful Mazda RX-7 and Honda S2000 engines in them, it makes what is an already powerful car a whole lot more fun; if you can afford the $25,000 or £15,000 bill for doing it!

....but I don't thnk I'll be dropping a V8 just yet, I've made a good friend in Phil Dixon who runs a company called Performance 5 (www.performance5.com) and David from Tracktec (www.tracktec.co.uk) and they really know their stuff, they will both be coming up with some solutions for my power goal....200bhp here I come!

This month I managed to save up some cash to get the car handling better than it already does, some nut cases in America make all these fantastic things for my car, there known as Flyin Miata (www.flyinmiata.com) and I've just bought there handling kit which basically replaces the entire suspension setup and makes it look cool.

Shocking News....Shocking Weather

The weather has always intrigued me, it's an amazing feat of nature, one minute it can please everyone the next it can take lives and devastate and entire community. (or state)

I've been following Hurricane Katrina and it still amazes me how such a weather system can dish out so much damage.

One american state - Lousiana has been seeing the effects AFTER the storm has passed. Even though "Katrina" missed New Orleans, the amout of water it dropped caused the barriers protecting the city (which is virtually under sea level) to burst!! leaving a trial of destruction - NEARLY 80% of the city is now underwater.

What annoyed me more is news channels in the UK only seem to care about showbiz or who's going with who while chucking in the odd murder or next government idea or mistake!

NOW only when people start dying and people are in peril then they start using the story...american news channels have been covering it for the last THREE days and this is where the internet comes into it's own.

I went in search of american news channels and I was surprised with my results. I watched high quality video (for free!) of the latest developments before/during and after the hurricane, the reporting is fantastic and the americans really know how to do news, some reporters stood out in the middle of storm while it was going on. My recommendations are www.cbsnews.com and www.foxnews.com you just need Real Player or Media Player to gain access to the video.

Some of the stuff that's being reported is shocking and quite upsetting at times, but it shows the real horror of what the weather can do.

Well the huge and massive MX-5 National at Goodwood has finished and I had a really good time. A great run up with some other cars and some good friends and company were kept on the campsite, also much alcohol was consumed.

Japanese Performance Meet - Reading - England

This happens once a month and every Japanese Performance Machine from your Nissan Pulsar to the big fat and loud Mazda RX-7 and Toyota Supra's turn up - so I don't get told off by the organisers - the meet is static - no NO RACING or DRAG STRIPPING or DRIFTING goes on - you can do it but you'll end up with huge fine from the police who are on site.

There were some lovely cars last night and us MX-5 owners were parked amongst the RX-7 and Scooby's (Subaru Impreza STi's) and we do get alot of respect from fellow car makes unlike the Civic Type R owners (bread van's in diguise)

You get to see seriously fast cars and great looking cars, the meet only lasts 2 or 3 hours but it's great to go and look at some car porn and plan for the future!

Big Car Show on the way....excited...maybe???

So the time has come when you're part of a car club to exhibit your car at the biggest display of your make and my time has come (I make it sound so dramatic don't I!) its the Mazda MX-5 Owners Club National.

This is my first national and I'll be camping for three days at the Goodwood Race Course in Sussex with friends I have met through the club, Im that concerned I've got a guy who polishes Lambourghini's and Ferrari's to do my car.

I've been to plenty of shows this year but the one that has to stick out is the Japanese Performance Magazine show at Hickstead, bombing round the M25 (legal speed limits) with 12 cars all interswopping positions with your hood down is one helluva of an experience.

You meet loads of people, see loads of car porn, lots of young ladies wearing next to nothing (and men with their tops off - don't interest me - but I don't want women complaining to Google) and even have a chance to a look at American Muscle Cars aswell.

So I'll be blogless for a few days as it's hard to do blogging from a middle of a field with no electricity!!

Death of the Honda NSX

Let me tell you a story, my Dad bought a car off the Mayor of Hull (ok it's not exciting so far but keep with me!) it was a Rover Sterling, this car had an engine from Honda, it was the 2.7 V 6 and it went like anything, this engine was also used (albeit a more tuned version) in a fantastic superscar called the Honda NSX! That little Rover was the closest I ever came to supercar performance when I was a teenager and it was great!

Unfortunately Honda announced a few weeks ago they've decided to discontinue this car, for a petrolhead like me this was a terrible decision, Id never been in one but it was probably one of the best mid-90's supercars of it's time and it was practical....and there lies it's problem.

Eh??? I hear you crying, see owning a road rocket like a Ferrari Enzo, Lambourghini or Koenigssegg (or however you spell it) is supposed to be great but very annoying.

for example to reverse in a Lambourghini you must hitch open, pop your head out so you can see where you're going and there's other moans, you try an top up a washer bottle on Maserati MC12, its a 23 step process!!

The NSX was just too practical, too nice, looked great and did everything, so as Honda would say it's CRAZY SENSIBLE, but the masters of VTEC have vowed they are making a new supercar, lets hope it arrives soon.

See only the Japs could build a supercar that was reliable and practical?!

Top Gear over...well until Autumn!

Booooooo! Top Gear (a UK based motoring magazine programme with a twist!) has finished for this season and they've had some great features. I mean what other TV programme would race a Transit round the Nurburbring, ram a top class Mercedes and Porsche round a sniper range and invite the the Japanese Drift Club to try and drift a Vauxhall Monaro.

No boring reviews or boring cars, just all out car-ma-geddon, I just don't know how they manage to get away with it with the car manufactirers keeping their beady eye on them. With Clarkson, Hammond and May at the helm presenting the show they provide an intoxicating mix of fun and excitement while still managing to take the p**s out of each other (it's a family blog so no swearing here!)

Fun with Skype!

I would love to talk about cars but I have to give a mention to a new bit of technology that's been hitting the internet recently and really taking off, it's called "Skype"(http://www.skype.com)

It allows me to talk to friends over the internet for FREE, the conversation in real-time and it's all free and all I have to download a program onto my computer. Up until now I had no one to talk to until my fellow blogger, ex-flatemate and best mate used it.

It tells you when someone is online and you can call them, similar to MSN I suppose! I accidentally dialled him then he phoned back and it sounded great, bit of a long delay so you can't talk over each other, the sound quality was crystal clear, he sounded like he was next door!

After we got over the intial shock, we got chatting! So if you've got mates or relatives abroad and want to speak to them without racking up a phone bill, try out Skype! Without sounding bias there's also Vonage (http://www.vonage.com) which does much the same thing.

Bizzarre Rush Hour

It's nearly 7.20 in the morning and I'm having the most bizarre rush hour, at this time the M25 should be gridlocked through the Essex, East London should be full of cars and routes around Hertfordshire and Buckinhamshire should be at least a bit busy....

....but something quite eary has happened, it's quiet, not one broken down, accident, or fire. A good thing I suppose, we got some small pockets of traffic but nothing out of ordinary.

In case you wondering why Im talking about this, well it's kinda of my job to report on the queues around Essex and Beds, Herts and Bucks. I also answer the jamlines for the stations and look at the cameras to keep the commuting public up to date as I can.

You often get these lulls during the summer where everyone seems to be on their holidays, once everyone is back I suppose the chaos will start again.

Well Im off to find out if the town centres are busy but don't moan at me if you're stuck in a queue this morning.

Extreme!! Japanese HP

I've managed to get some browsing done this weekend so I can get some more Japanese Horsepower for this site and have I found some amazing examples, I can't wait to show you some more, so we'll start small with a 900bhp Toyota Supra! It also happens to be one of my favourite cars.

For the people who are ain't clued up on cars and you're wondering what all this excitement is about bhp, it's really quite simple. All bhp is the figure used to tell you how much power your car has, a standard Ford Fiesta/Nissan Micra or VW Golf may have as little as 70bhp to 90bhp, so the bigger the number, the faster, louder and better it goes.

This video is only about 30 seconds, but wow what a drift, tyres probably finished off after this!

July - Where's the Sun!?

I wouldn't be an english without a pop at the british weather!! Yesterday the weather was fantastic, today it's really miserable and this is supposed to be Summer, apparently my friends at Met Check (http://www.metcheck.com) says w'ere picking up the end of a storm that hit America last week.

This also means my washing and polishing duties have been disrupted, before I bought my car I thought you shove any old wax and wash on it, further research suggests otherwise, so now cleaning my car is a four step process, you you did read that correctly FOUR! but the results are fantastic, so Im plugging for the first time, get some Meguiars (http://www.meguiars.com) you'll never look back - in fact you'll be looking all the time.

I've never been a fan of all these Messenger programs, they allow you type things to your mates and they can reply instantly, kind of like a personal chatroom. Yesterday I really saw the benefits, I chatted to my mate in Japan for hours and a friend in Manchester for hours and had a real laugh, you can even get up to 20 people chatting at the same time although it can get a bit overwhelming, but mainly it's more fun than your mobile dropping out every few minutes. I still find it annoying that the minute you turn on your machine everyone must say "Hello!"

Top down driving risks!
I dunno what it is with top down driving, I mean it's great fun and all that but it can have it's risks, take yesterday for example, Im driving along enjoying the rare sun we have an England and a wasp decides to fly in and stick around in the car. Now I don't mind passengers in the car as they don't sting but these insects do, of course fairly impossible to wave it away while trying to control a car doing 60mph, so I had to jump out the car and wave it away while looking like an idiot at the same time as most people think you battling with thin air! (if only they knew?!)

My favourite top down moments are when the weather is changeable!?! You get in your car the weather is great, drop the top and then a sudden downpour decides to come out of nowhere, now if you can stay above 40mph, the water will go straight over you but reach some traffic lights or a junction and it's an instant soaking; if it's too heavy no matter what speed you do it'll start coming round the sides.

My favourite experiences have always come from nightime driving, some nights I'll never forget particular when it's clear when it's just you, the car and an empty open road. There's nothing like it

Well Im going to give this blogging thing a go, I blame my good friend over at Cellsuite (http://www.cellsuite.blogger.com) who made his Blog so very very interesting that I thought Id give it a go.

So my passion at the moment is Japanese Performance Sportscars, this interest has come about after buying a MAzda MX-5 often quoted as being a "hairdressers car" but hey what you don't know is the potential of these babys to go very fast and very quick which some simple and quite inexpensive modifications.

Over the next few months, it's my mission to get my baby to 200bhp from it's measily 140bhp to give the thing some go and I'll be posting all my pics and advice on here, you know it gets embarrasing getting wasted by VW Polo Turbo Deisel and little kids in their souped up Novas at the lights not that I'd ever endorse that kind of behaviour.

This place won't all be Japanese cars, cars and cars, I'll take a look at some motoring fun and madness, some of my madcap driving stories and even what life is like during a typical morning rush hour and introduce you to some of the nutters that get up at the same time as me to bring the travel news to you.

As you've probably noticed it's very early so Im trying for 2 posts a day as Im one of those silly people who get up far too early in the morning, I broadcast travel news on the radio and you can find me on BBC Essex http://www.bbc.co.uk/essex or BBC Three Counties http://www.bbc.co.uk/threecounties and other radio stations in the UK.
